For about two years I woke up already behind. Phone in my hand before my feet touched the floor, coffee on an empty stomach, and that feeling that the day had started without me.
Nothing dramatic was wrong. I was just tired in a way that coffee did not fix. So I did something unglamorous. I changed the first hour of my morning, one small thing at a time, and I kept only what worked.
Here are the five habits that stayed.
1. Daylight before screens
Within the first hour, I step outside for five to ten minutes. Even on gray days. Morning light helps set your body clock, which helps you feel alert earlier and sleepy at the right time at night. Sleep researchers have said this for years, and it costs nothing. I take my coffee onto the balcony and that is the whole habit.
2. A glass of water before the coffee
After a night without drinking, you wake up a little dehydrated. I drink a full glass first. I cannot point to one study that proves it makes me a better person. But I feel less foggy by mid-morning, and my skin stopped looking so flat.
3. Protein at breakfast
I used to skip breakfast or grab toast. After 50, your body needs more protein to hold on to muscle, and a carb-only breakfast had me hungry by ten. Now it is eggs, Greek yogurt, or cottage cheese with fruit. Many nutrition researchers suggest spreading protein across your meals instead of eating most of it at dinner, so I aim for a solid serving in the morning.
4. Ten minutes of movement
Not a workout. A walk around the block, or some stretching on the living room floor. Moving early loosens the stiffness that shows up after 50 and makes the rest of the day feel easier.
5. One thing that is only mine
Before the world gets to me, I do one small thing for myself. I write three lines in a notebook, or I just sit with my coffee and do nothing. It sounds soft. After my divorce, it was the thing that made mornings bearable.
What about supplements
Around the same time, I added a NAD+ and resveratrol supplement to my morning, right next to the water glass. I will be honest with you. I cannot say it did one specific thing on its own, because I changed several habits at once. What I can say is that it became part of a routine I actually stick to. If you are curious about NAD+, I explained it in more detail in this article. And please talk to your doctor first, especially if you take any medication.
Start with one
Do not try all five tomorrow. Pick the easiest one. Do it for two weeks. Then add the next.
That is how my mornings changed. Not with a big reset, just with small things I kept doing.
